TERMS OF ENGAGEMENT

Confidentiality
I am committed to protecting the privacy and security of your personal data and adhere to a full privacy policy in accordance with the requirements of GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation).  My full privacy policy is available on my website, or alternatively via hard copy upon request – please ensure you read and understand this.

I work in accordance to the BACP’s Ethical Framework.

Sessions are strictly confidential.  However, in the case of actual or potential serious harm to self or others, I would consider widening confidentiality.  Wherever possible I would discuss this with my client first.

As a requirement of professional practice I undertake regular supervision where issues from sessions may be discussed – all material is disguised to protect client identity.

Data Protection

With your consent, I will keep minimal confidential case notes and personal details about you. These are stored in hard copy only and kept in a locked filing cabinet. I may communicate with you by email or by telephone/text to arrange appointments, but due to the non-secure nature of this communication confidentiality can not be guaranteed and you are advised not to share any detailed information by email or text. I keep records about our contact for 3 years after the end of our work together.

If you have any queries about any aspect of confidentiality, data protection or record-keeping please discuss this with me.

Length of Sessions

Individual sessions last for 50 minutes.  Couples therapy sessions last one hour. All sessions will start promptly and finish on time.

If you happen to arrive early, please wait as I am unable to start sessions before the appointment time nor am I able to extend sessions.

Fees & Payment

All individual or couples session fees should be paid at the end of each session, unless a monthly invoice has been requested and agreed.

All fees can be paid by cheque, cash or BACS payment.

Cancellations & Missed Sessions

Regularity and continuity of sessions are important for successful therapy. Ideally sessions take place on the same day and at a fixed time each week, however I will try and offer flexibility where possible if circumstances require.

If a session is cancelled within less than 48 hours notice then 50% of the fee will be charged.  If a session is cancelled with less than 24 hours notice the full fee will be charged.

If I need to cancel/postpone a session myself due to illness or an emergency, no fee will be charged.

I will advise clients of any planned absences as far in advance as possible.

The Process & Ending

As I work in both a short-term focused manner or an open-ended longer term way, we will agree to a fixed number of sessions after the initial assessment appointment(s).  We will then review how the work is going at regular intervals.

When the time comes to end therapy it is preferable for the decision to be reached mutually rather than on impulse.  Therapy is not always easy – sometimes it can feel as if things get worse before they get better. Please remember that if this happens it does not mean failure or time to end the sessions necessarily.  Endings themselves are an extremely important and insightful part of the work.
